Run the Marathon without your GARMIN?

With the 2009 Portland Marathon quickly approaching and race day now only 6 days away, my wife has thrown down the ultimate challenge… RUN THE PORTLAND MARATHON WITHOUT MY GARMIN!

Can you say…Race plan? Splits? Pace? Heart Rate? How in the world am I going to stick to my plan? She contends that I don’t need to run with the watch because I know my body and fitness level so well that I will “know” where I am, and frankly, “who cares!” Meaning, I should run free, run for fun, run because I have trained hard and let the chips fall where they fall.

Is she crazy? Or is it just me? I am honestly struggling with this dare. Especially coming from your wife…this is a serious test. In part I have to agree with her, but the obsessive, perfectionist side of me says “stick to your plan and monitor your performance as you go”.

As you can tell, I am torn by this dare. Largely in part, due to the fact that I am the ultimate competitor and want to prove to her that I could run Portland or any other marathon for that matter without my watch and still PR…after all it’s not the damn watch that is doing the running, its my LEGS  and HEAD.

With that said, I am putting it out there to the running world for a survey!

    B) NO

Why not?… give it the ‘ol college try! You never know, you might love it and do better than you ever thought possible.

    Don’t be a chicken… hee hee… (Love you!)

  2. Facebook User Says:

    B) NO. For one reason and one reason only…your wife said so!!! No need to test those waters bro!!!

  3. Lindsay Says:

    B) NO! Of course I am partial to agree with my best friend. I think you should heed your own advice- you trained hard now just “enjoy” race day! You can do it coach, besides what do you have to loose?…

um….. the truth is that the ultimate competitor will always strive for the largest challenge, now running without it seems like a challege but not listening to your wife is the true challenge, she put it out there to bait you and see how headstrong you are. Runner, you need to stick to your guns and complete this run as planned, then maybe for your next one you decide to run without your “garmin” thens its totally your idea you can challenge yourself however you see fit. FORGET the wifey and just do you,

    P.S Hi tiffers!!!!

    B) NO. I bet you learn a lot from an experience without the Garmin…I’ll admit though, I would be pretty scared without it. Maybe I should be listening to my body more!!

Technology is there to help you improve upon your time, why not have a little more help. Some of us are motivated by numbers, and constantly striving for each 10th of a second. Why not have constant feedback to help you improve, and to keep your mind focused.
Having said all that, I would listen to your wife she is the boss.

I wouldn’t want to run without my Garmin….but have done it! Not sure what to tell you….a challenge is always good and see what happens or try it on another race…not one that you have a specific plan for already. Its like the shoes….remember our conversation?!

    No Garmin! 2 reasons:
    1. You are a badass and can be “one” with your body and the act of running because the perfectionist in you has made you train as hard as you have :)
    2. Tiff is your wife and you will never have a better source of support or someone who will challenge you as much as she does, so just do it! ;)
    Have fun!
