The Left Just Ain’t Right

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

No, this isn’t about politics. In fact, I’m about the least political person you’ll ever meet. This is unfortunately about my rash of injuries so far this year and just goes to show, anything can happen at any time. Blessed with an injury free 2009, it’s coming back to me tenfold.

It all started during the Walt Disney World Marathon. While trying to be the “pillar of strength” for my sister in her first marathon, it turned into an intense internal battle with bursitis in my hip. It struck without warning and I hadn’t experienced it since three years earlier when it took a month of rest to fully recover.

Another visitor came calling just two weeks later. My phantom ankle injury came out of nowhere. I couldn’t tell you when or how it happened, but one morning I could barely walk. After applying the R.I.C.E. (Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevate.) rule to this unwelcome visitor for a week, it left as quickly as it appeared.

Now comes the latest in this short but crazy year. My achilles is now as tight as a knot and sore as can be. This one I felt coming and have taken measures to control the pain as much as possible. Thank goodness for Ben Gay Pain Relieving Patches and KT Tape, I’ve been able to work through it.

These are all taking place on the left side of my body. Even though I’ve waiting until one ailment is healing/healed, one injury is compounding the next.

With only a week and a half remaining until the Red Rock Marathon and Half Marathon, I can’t afford another week off. I’ve already canceled my back-to-back halfs and will then concentrate on getting ready for the Fargo Marathon in May.

I’ll sprinkle a prayer for all of you that are injury free in the hope that you stay that way.

Witch Doctor?

Alvin and the Chipmunks

There are some runs when you just don’t know what to expect. You could run into somebody and share interesting stories, encounter a bizarre event or see something unexpected. It’s something totally different when you get throw a curveball from you kids.

In the middle of an easy 5 miles with my iPod on shuffle, who should come blaring thru my headphones but Alvin and the Chipmunks and their Witch Doctor anthem. After my initial shock, I couldn’t keep from smiling. Obviously, they must have been messing with my iTunes playlists and added this cult classic into my hard rock playlist.

They didn’t know they did it but it definitely added a little something extra into an ordinary run.

Sonday

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sonday, Sunday.

I’ve changed my running schedule. I am now moving my long distance running days to Sunday because Saturdays have become Sondays. This is quality time that my son and I spend cruising around the neighborhood – me in my running shoes and him on his bike.

As your kids grow older, the quality time we get to spend with them seems to get less and less. I’ve now found out how cool it is to run and break down the “little things” in life with him. We find time to talk about the important things in life: the future, television shows and Bakugan. Every once and I while we get a couple of life lessons thrown in for good measure but it’s not about lecturing. This is dad and son time. It’s about being together and being active. It’s about instilling a lifestyle that you hope will stick with him as he grows older. Most of all, it’s about memories. I want him to be able to look back on these times with fondness and hopefully pass them along to his kids.

One day this routine will grow into us running together. One day my youngest son will be able to join our duet. One day, this day will be known as Sonsday.

Phantom Injury

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I can accept rolling an ankle or pulling up lame from a muscle strain but what I cannot handle are Phantom Injuries. You know the ones – you wake up and can’t walk or you’re just standing in line at the grocery store and your knee buckles. Injuries that seem to happen for no reason.

Saturday I ran and felt fine. Sunday night I could barely walk on my left ankle. Nothing of any consequence happened in between. Figuring it was some freak feeling that would go away, I did nothing. Monday morning I woke up and it was worse. I started to R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate) all Monday and Tuesday it was better. The worse part of this whole thing is that I had to stop training even before I really got started. This Phantom Injury has now sidelined me for another week so I’m scrapping my plans for back-to-back half marathons in March. I’ll be lucky to be ready enough for the climbs of the Red Rock Marathon the first weekend of March.

I’m sure these injuries have some reason for happening somewhere along the way but the way they present themselves make no sense whatsoever. Have you had any Phantom Injuries that just showed up in the middle of you’re training? Let’s hear about them.

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Believe it or not, ORB is officially 1 year old. Time has gone by so fast that it’s actually 1 week and 1 year!!! Who would have thought that 1) I would have found time to keep providing content to this website (181 posts) and 2) have enough things to write about!!!

What originally started as a place to write down the many random thoughts that passed thru my brain while running has now taken on many forms:

  • Spirituality – After reading “Running the Spiritual Path” by Roger D. Joslin, I committed my time running to giving that time back to God. What better way to spend hours of solitude than sharing that time praying and meditating?
  • Runner Safety – Finding myself running early in the mornings, I saw many runner’s in danger on our roadways. It has been a goal of mine to share what I’ve learned and read so that many more runner’s will be more visible while running. It went so far as Troy’s post on “Dexting” getting him interviewed in Runner’s World for Liz Robbins’ article Collision Course.
  • Encouraging Others towards Fitness – With the creation of the Fargo Fitness Challenge, I’ve now embarked on another passion, encouraging others to take up running. I know what running has done for my health and if I can get one person off the coach and back into fitness, I’ll consider this one a success.

I would personally like to thank the nearly 3,500 people who have come to this site from over 50 countries and every U.S. state. To the many friends that I have met here, I’m glad that this site has been a conduit for some really great stories and friendships that span the globe.

Who knows what the future holds but if it’s anything like the last year, it’s anybody’s guess!!!

Speed Hills

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

This year I’m trying something new. I’m calling them Speed Hills (for lack of a better name). I’ve never done speed or interval workouts before but thought I’d add them into my running routine. My running schedule had always included some tempo runs where in the middle of a longer run, I would pick up the pace for 3-4 miles. Trying to push myself to get a little faster (I consider myself slow and I am).

With the introduction of combining speed work with hills, I’m hoping to build leg strength and speed at the same time.

There is a 1/3 mile stretch of road near myself that I have dubbed “The Road to Nowhere.” It actually is a paved road that really does lead to nowhere. It’s close to traffic and hasn’t been connected to any other streets until more housing developments are completed. The name also has another meaning. It’s a really steep climb – ascending over 100 ft. – over the stretch of the climb. At the bottom is starts out gradually and evens up into a steady ascent which attacks your legs unmercifully!!!

After a 1 mile warmup running to the street and down to it’s base, I planned on doing 5 intervals for my first time out. I’m going to have to work up to sprinting the entire .3 miles so I’ve decided to start with half that distance (.15 miles). Using lampposts as my guide, I would sprint up at a fast but sustainable pace and then do a recovery jog back down to the start.

To my surprise, I was extremely consistent on my intervals (without timing them) averaging 1:03 per interval (6:45/mi. or 8.9 mph). For me this is extremely fast and going uphill, an awesome workout!!! After finishing, I walked and recovered up the remaining part of the hill and then jogged it back to my house. The entire workout ended up being 3.2 miles total but it wasn’t the total mileage that I was concerned with.

The change in pace and workout type has actually spurred my need for this workout. There’s nothing better than the feeling of near exhaustion and recovering just as quick. I’ll keep you updated on these workouts as I increase repetitions and distance in preparation for the Red Rock 1/2 Marathon where the hills are long and steep.

The Fargo Fitness Challenge

Fargo Fitness Challenge

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am about the Fargo Fitness Challenge. What started out as an offer to come run the Fargo Marathon May 21/22 has blossomed into a movement to get people active and running.

Yes, Fargo is in North Dakota. No, buffalo still don’t roam free. Yes there is electricity. No, the movie Fargo was not actually filmed in Fargo (go figure). Yes, it’s flat. I mean REALLY flat!!!

It all started in November when my good friend Heidi asked if I’d like to come run in one of the Fargo Marathon events with her. She was a runner back in high school and was quite an elite level at one time until being derailed by back surgery (which has prevented her from running) and taking time to start a family. After 10 years, she was ready to give running (and her back) another shot. With my sister already committed to running, I had to finally stop waffling and sign my name to the dotted line.

So now I was running Fargo (my home town) but spiritually, I really needed more. I’ve really been in a slump lately and I needed to stoke the fires. Heidi and I spoke one Saturday and came up with an idea. What if we tried to inspire others to run/walk with us. Not just runners…but friends, family, neighbors, kids and acquaintances who might need a nudge (or push) to get active and back on the healthy track. There’s nothing better than having others there by your side encouraging, helping and challenging you every step of the way.

So that’s where we are friends. In the first week, we already have over 35 people on our Facebook page and another 11 people confirmed participating in one of the weekend events (5K, 10K, 1/2 Marathon or Full Marathon). My running spirits couldn’t be higher and those that I’ve spoken to are equally inspired. With around 100 days remaining until the event, I’d like to officially challenge you to join us in Fargo, May 21 and May 22. Click the link below to go to our Facebook page and join the movement. Can’t make it to Fargo? Pass this along and help be a part of something I think is going to be pretty great.

A Runner’s Right of Passage

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I’ve been waiting over 4+ years for this to happen. I’d read about. Heard runners talk about it on countless occasions and always felt left out. Never having the experience I couldn’t add anything of substance to their conversations. I didn’t want to be the one to admit it had never happened to me. I thought if you were a “real” runner it would just happen because you were a real runner.

Yes friends, I finally have my first black toenail!!! I was beginning to think that I was immune from this running phenomenon. Maybe I just picked really good shoes and socks all this time. Funny thing is, this didn’t happen until I actually purchased a little larger shoe.

It happened during the Rock-n-Roll Las Vegas Marathon. That was the race I received the dual blisters of contrasting colors. As the weeks passed, I noticed that a toenail my left foot was a little redder than the others. After the Walt Disney World Marathon it was a lovely purple that I proudly displayed wearing sandals in the Bahamas. Now a couple of weeks later, it has finally faded to black. Now I have to admit that the whole toenail isn’t black. The bottom half has returned to its normal color but I’ve gone to the rule book and it counts.

Have you had your runner’s right of passage?

I’m Back Baby!!!

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Well my 1 month, self-imposed layoff didn’t go to well. After three weeks off, I couldn’t take it anymore and started running again this morning. The last time the bursitis in my hip flared up, I took a month off and all was good. I didn’t feel my hip after my first week so I think I’ll be OK. I’m also going to start this first training period going back to a shorter, mid-foot stride to take some of the pressure off of my hip, knees and arches. Towards the end of last year, my stride was really long and may have contributed to my injuries at the Walt Disney World Marathon.

I am really excited about something a couple friends and I are going to be doing for the Fargo Marathon. After running my first marathon, I’ve continually been looking for something more from running than just technical tees and medals. The details haven’t been totally worked out yet but I will let you know this week what’s going on. I’m hoping many of you will be able to participate.
