Lobes of the Brain

My name is Eric Selvig and what started as a narrative of the inner workings of my brain has transformed into running with a purpose. It has become more of a journey. One in which I look to find a deeper relationship with God – thru running. I don’t run 5/min. miles and completing an event is a victory in my book. What I am is somebody that loves to run. I’ve completed 4 marathons and 11 – 1/2 marathons in the past 5+ years. I started to run for my health and continue to run for my spiritual health.

When ORB started, I was running it alone – I am alone no longer. Troy Schrenk, one of my running comrades and an inspiration for ORB has joined me on this narrative journey. Troy brings another competitive level to this running blog. A couple of years ago, I gave him a push in the right direction and he’s taken it to the Nth level. For those of you “Boston Qualifier” types, Troy’s your guy. He’ll share his serious mileage and insight as well as off-the-wall brain type stuff ORB is noted for.

“What? You want me to run how far?” My name is Tara Maras, and that was my stunned reaction when my would-be high school cross-country coach announced the course on day one. I promptly ran home. Returned my Nike Air Max shoes too. Distance running seemed like a snore compared to the hype (and jocks!) I encountered as a basketball player and track & field athlete. That was then…snowy Erie, Pennsylvania. This is now…fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. For the past 16 years, I’ve been a gym rat. More accurately, a gym robot. I’m obsessively consistent. I have close personal relationships with “my” treadmill, elliptical and bike. Enjoy pumping a little iron too. To keep it interesting, I hit the roads for long training runs. Not too long ago, a co-worker encouraged me to mix it up, set some running goals and “just do it,” that is, race. So, I just did it. No longer in need of hype and jocks (got married along the way!), I’ve fallen head-over-heels in love with all things running. I have a growing collection of finisher medals, inspiring new friends and a full calendar of half marathons. I feel super, sleep great, have loads of energy and have achieved balance. I also have blisters and very ugly feet. Did I mention I like the gear too?
