…and a 1/2 makes 10

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

With the completion of the Red Rock Half Marathon this weekend, that makes 10 long distance races under my belt. While compared to others this number may not be earth shattering, but if you would have asked me or others that knew me and my eating habits before running, I would consider this quite an accomplishment!!!

Most know my story but when I started running in 2006, I weighed 270 pounds and decided to make a life change. Now in my fifth year of hitting the pavement, I thought I’d look back and reflect on where I’ve been:

2006
Las Vegas Marathon – 5:01:24
My first marathon. With the support of my entire family cheering me on and cramps in every muscle I finish with cheers and hugs. Discouraged with the course, I vow not to run the marathon again until they change the route.

2007
Disneyland Half Marathon – 2:29:02
The first trip to the Magic Kingdom has me hooked. Running thru Disneyland, California Adventure and Anaheim Stadium will become a yearly trip for the entire family. To date, the hottest race I’ve run in. Race was nearly black flagged before the start.

Las Vegas Half Marathon – 2:00:46
Course didn’t change and I was starting to like this half marathon thing. After being discouraged by my previous half, I set my current PR that still stands (but hopefully not for long).

2008
Disneyland Half Marathon - 2:10:53

Back again for my second running. Since the Angels were in town, we didn’t get to run thru Anaheim Stadium but the weather was much more suited to running. Now used to running longer distances more often, I quickly shower and then off to the parks with the family.

Las Vegas Half Marathon – 2:18:09
I was really hoping to go under 2 hours but a severely sprained ankle 3 weeks before the race changes my plans drastically. I end up limping to the finish but “finish” is the key word in this sentence. There’s always next year…or is it?

2009
Red Rock Half Marathon – 2:18:00
Wanted to expand my race frequency, I opt for a race right out my back door. While I know the hills will be a challenge, the scenery more than makes up for the burning thighs and breakneck downhills. Will end up being a staple on my race schedule.

Disneyland Half Marathon - 2:02:13
Missing out out a Ragnar Relay team, we’re back to the family’s favorite race. From their perspective, it’s wake up, eat, wait for dad and then go see Mickey. Tried to go under 2 hours again but ran out of gas after trying to make up for lost time with heavy traffic at the start. Will settle for a course PR.

Rock-n-Roll Las Vegas Marathon – 4:40:28
Finally!!! Devine Sports out…Competitor Racing in. This move was highly anticipated and didn’t let anybody down. A new course with nearly half of the marathon run on the strip. Cold weather, extreme hunger, cramps and bonking prevented a better time but a 20 minute PR shouldn’t be looked down upon. I considered this race as a tune up for what was to come.

2010
Walt Disney World Marathon – 4:55:18
My most memorable race to date. After encouraging my sister to start running, we met in chilly Florida to run her first marathon. While I was hoping to “help” her finish strong, I was the one who had to battle bursitis while she was the strong one. Still a great running experience and can’t wait to run with her again.

Red Rock Half Marathon – 2:09:36
Another great race. Running in the opposite direction of the previous year, I overcame a lack of training due to injuries to PR the course by over 8 minutes. If you haven’t run this race, I highly recommend it.

2010 Race Schedule

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

With a couple of weeks left of my self-induced month long rest, I’ve had time to finalize my race wish list for 2010. Of course, this is subject to change and still needs to by signed off on by my better half. I’m trying to run at least one more race per year and this year has five events on the schedule. Please let me know if you plan on running any of these races. I loved to meet you in person (just like Team Flash in Florida).

6 Tunnels Half Marathon or Red Rock Canyon Half Marathon or both?
Henderson, NV/Las Vegas, NV
March 13/March 6

I need to do a little more digging on these races. I ran the Red Rock half last year and it’s great. The course is run on the scenic drive that weaves through Red Rock Canyon and the views alone are worth the $70 entry fee (until 2/21). The inclines are steep and yes your legs will be put to the the test but the organization was great and the medals were a really nice surprise.

The 6 Tunnels half looks really cool and I’ve heard good things about it. It is all the way across the valley (Red Rock is literally 5 minutes from my house) but the course route follow an old railway line that was used in the building of Hoover Dam. It goes thru tunnels cut thru the mountains and there are views of Lake Mead and Hoover Dam along the way. It happens to be a day before my wedding anniversary so I need to tread lightly on this one.

Fargo Marathon
Fargo, ND
May 22

Yes, I’ve finally committed and will be going home to run in the city I grew up in. After being lobbied by several friends for several years, my boyz and I will be going back to my roots. This will be another chance to run with my sister and I’m really excited to be running with one of my very good friends from high school who is going to run for the first time since a cervical spine fusion in 2000. They’re shooting for 20,000 runners this year so if you’re looking for a great race around this time, this one’s for you!!! Runner’s World ranked Fargo the 8th in the Top 10 marathons in the U.S. They’re also breaking off the 5K this year a day earlier and are offering participants the Go Far Challenge where you can race both the 5K and either the 10K, half or full marathon and earn a special medal (much like Disney’s Goofy’s Challange). Go Far in 2010!!!

Running With The Devil Half Marathon
Boulder City, NV
June 26

I almost ran this one last year but I think I was a little beat up. This is one of those “what are you thinking” races. The event ranges in distances from 5K to 50 miles but the kicker is the starting times. Each distance is planned to start so you’ll be racing during the hottest part of the day. This is June by the way and it’s the desert – you put two and two together and you’ll understand the race name. The marathon starts at 10 a.m. and the half starts at noon. The one good thing about this race is you don’t have to worry about getting up at 3 a.m. to make it to the corrals. Heck, you might even have a chance for a nap before the gun sounds.

Disneyland Half Marathon
Anaheim, CA
September 5 (Labor Day Weekend)

This will be my fourth year running this race and I can’t imagine not having this race on my schedule. This is the fifth year the race is being held (can’t believe I didn’t know about the first one) and they will be offering a special 5th year medal. This race will also complete my Coast to Coast Challenge – running Disney World and Disneyland in the same calendar year. The Angels won’t be in town again this year so that should mean the route will take us thru Anaheim Stadium again. It’s a crazy adrenaline rush and I’ve been know to walk that section just to spend a little more time in there.

Ragnar Relay
Valley of Fire to Las Vegas, NV
October 22-23

This is going to depend on two things and two things only. First, how is my body feeling and second, can I find a team this year. I was so excited that Ragnar came to Vegas last year. Since my fist expo when I picked up one of their brochures, I wanted to run this race. So last year, I thought I had a team all lined up and ready to go when it all just seemed to fade away. This year, I’m going to be looking high and low for a team. Whether I know you or not it won’t matter – just give me a holler and I’m there.

Rock-n-Roll Las Vegas Marathon
Las Vegas, NV
December 5

I plan to bookend my marathons this year. Last year’s inaugural Rock-n-Roll “rocked” and I expect more of the same next year. With over 23,000 participants last year, I’m fully expecting this race to boom in the next couple of years into one of the nations bigger marathons. The organization was top notch, running up and down the strip is crazy and the course is well thought out. Even though I struggled last year I still thought the whole experience was one of my favorite of the year.

So that’s it (for now). After looking over this list after I typed it, I realized that I could be doing 7-8 race this year. That’s double what I’ve ever run before so we’ll see how it goes. I can guarantee that Fargo, Disneyland and Las Vegas are in stone – the others will fall into place.

Walt Disney World Marathon

Disney World Marathon

Well, we’re officially 6 days away from the Walt Disney World Marathon. With the Holidays and my recent running rut, it’s really snuck up on me. While training has been going well, it’s just kind of been there. It’s funny looking back. During the weeks leading up to the Rock-n-Roll Las Vegas Marathon, all I could do was think and write about that race. Now here we are under a week away and this is basically the first post on this race. Well, ignored no more!!! Let’s get to it!!!

This race has been on the schedule now for more than a year. What started out as a gift from my wife, turned into something WAY more. Accompanying me in this race will be my sister Kirsten – her first marathon!!! It was supposed to have been a half marathon but there was no way I was flying across the country just for a half marathon. The die was cast and the challenged was accepted. My sister would be training and running in her first marathon.

After running the Disneyland Half Marathon now the last three years, I can’t wait to run an entire marathon with Disney. From the overall organization (minus the Expos), the excitement and the Disney atmosphere – this is going to a fun race no matter what happens.

They boast that the course has no more than 100 feet elevation change and with Orlando sitting at 98 feet above sea level, it should be fast (I hope). The only things I’m really concerned about is the humidity, crowds of runners squeezing thru tight sections and being strong supporting my sister. The course winds throughout all four parks with sections on roads surrounding the resort. They’ve also put together some race videos that take you along sections of the course as well as a Google Earth 3D tour (although I can’t get the plugin to work).

The best part about this weekend is that it has become a family event. Not only will my family be joining me, but my sisters entire family as well as my parents will be cheering us on!!! Everybody came out to Las Vegas to support me in my first marathon four years ago and it’s only fitting we all regroup and do the same thing for my lil sis!!!

I’ll be heading out Wednesday and won’t be back to Las Vegas the following Thursday (the wife and I are throwing in a long belated honeymoon – almost 12 years later). No worries about the website though, I’ll have posts scheduled for you all while I’m away.

Mickey…here we come!!!

Race Review: Rock-n-Roll Las Vegas Marathon Expo

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Rock-n-Roll Las Vegas Marathon Review (1 of 3) Health & Fitness Expo

With a day of rest (work) under my belt, it’s time to look back at the weekend that was. To give you an idea of how much I enjoyed the expo and it’s efficiency, I ended up going twice. I had to go to the expo on Friday and pick up my boyz bibs and t-shirts for Kids Rock Las Vegas. This worked out quite well because the crowds were not as intense as they were on Saturday. If I could sum up the expo in one word, it would be EFFICIENT!!!

The lines were fast at the bib pickup. With over 20+ stations, they were easily marked and the volunteers were quick and knowledgeable. I heard the woman next to me rattle off a bunch of information to a fellow runner. The t-shirts and goodie bags were in separate areas and fully staffed. It maybe took me a total of 5 minutes to get my bibs, shirts and bag for me and my boyz. Even though I didn’t go thru the bib lines on Saturday, I didn’t see very long lines.

I’ve been to enough expos now to be able to compare the race apparel and this race by far had the most logo gear I have ever seen. This puts the logo wear at the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon races to shame. But for all the clothing options I had one big problem with it…the price. There wasn’t much to be had for under $20 and the really cool stuff (jackets, technical apparel, etc.) was way out of my price range. Here’s to hoping that there is a very large Holiday Sale online right around the corner.

Their was nothing really special about the exhibitors. It seems the same sunglasses and clothing exhibits were there as every other expo. There were a couple that really stood out though. CLEAR had a very cool booth were you could sign up for the online text updates and Nissan booth loomed large in the back. Nissan had Meb Keflezighi there on Friday and they also were partnering with Runner’s World on a photo booth. Props to the Pearl Izumi exhibit (just because that’s the kind of shoes I wear), Calico Racing (local running event organizer) and the Rock-n-Roll hallway with all the marathon events on the way in.

The thing about the Health Expo that always makes me laugh is that it’s right next to the Cowboy Christmas every year. For those of you not aware, the National Finals Rodeo is in town the same week and they have this Christmas expo next door. There’s nothing funnier walking down the long hallway to the expos with runners and cowboys walking together. Talk about polar opposites!!!

If I had to guess, this expo is only going to get bigger and better every year. Way to go Rock-n-Roll – day one and you already exceeded expectations.

Transition Training

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

I’ve run so many 1/2 marathons that I’ve forgotten how different training for a marathon actually is. I’m not talking anything earth shattering but a couple of runs into my first week of training for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon, it feels great!!!

While training for the shorter distances, we tend to focus more and more on speed. Obviously, the shorter the distance, the longer you can hold onto a faster pace. After 16 weeks training for the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon, my training paces were in the sub 9/min. mile range. Now that I’ve switched into marathon mode, my training schedule is asking for long runs to be around 10:30/min. mile pace. Crazy right?

I’m setting myself up for a 4:15 finish which would be a personal best by 45 minutes (my first and only marathon was run in 5:01:24). I’m going to force myself to obey the speed limit for now and see how it goes. I’ve noticed that this year by dropping weight and doing more speed training that I’ve gotten a lot faster. While focusing on slower splits, I’ve approached each training run much more relaxed and have been able to keep a relaxed form throughout the run. While I’ll most definitely speed on my runs, slowing down might just be what the doctor ordered.

Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend Review – Day Three

marathonmedalDisneyland 1/2 Marathon
Sunday, September 6th, 2009

First, let me say I’m biased when it comes to this race. It’s the one race I run that my family can actively participate in almost all the hoopla – and when they can’t, there’s plenty to keep them occupied. With that said, I enjoyed this year’s event (Expo aside) more than the previous two.

In previous years, I was always really early to the start which meant lots of waiting. This year, I slept in a little later and headed to the start a 1/2 hour before the gun. Big mistake. With over 13,500 runners, I was trapped in the back of Corral B. In fact, I couldn’t get into my corral until the wheelchair start when they lifted the gates between A and B. Normally this wouldn’t bother me much except I knew that the more people in front of me would mean slow going running thru the parks.

The weather was almost perfect – mid 60′s – but the humidity was in the 70% range. This meant more water and not skipping stations. As an added bonus, a marine layer of clouds blew inland just as the sun was rising and stayed for good hour before the sun burned it off.

As predicted, the first three miles thru Disney’s California Adventure and Disneyland proved to be slow. I was only able to average 10/min. miles and couldn’t wait to hit the streets of Anaheim. The coolest thing about this race is the community participation. I’ve never competed in a race with so many different organization represented. From cheer groups, bands, dancers, boy and girl scouts – it’s really fun to see a community get behind an event like this.

Knowing I had a lot of time to pick up, I kicked it into gear and started putting in low 8/min. miles. Since I’m no speedster, I think I’m most proud of the fact that between miles 3-9 I was able to keep this pace steady. In fact, when I paced out my time, I was actually looking at a 1:57 finish which would have been a great time for me and a personal best.

The sports geek in my really comes out when the race route reaches the Honda Center (home of the Anaheim Ducks) and Angel Stadium. First the course wrapped around the Honda Center and then onto the Santa Ana trail (a hard pack trail that runs next to the Santa Ana river). I swear that the first step I took on that trail, a rock with my name on it found it’s way into my shoe. Not wanting to ruin my new found “speed,” I chose to wait until I exited the trail at the next water stop. This is where my race took a turn for the worse.

As I took off my shoe and rid myself of my pesky passenger, I stiffened up like a board. In a matter of 30 seconds, I could barely move. Only the thought of running thru Angel Stadium got my wheels moving again.

Running thru Angel Stadium is awesome. It’s amazing how big the stadium is and imaging yourself playing in front of 40,000 fans makes the trip thru it an adventure. To add to the atmosphere, there had to be at least a thousand boy and girl scouts in the stands – all in the front row waiting for high fives. This was the coolest moment of the whole race and I truly appreciate everybody who was there and the organizers for putting that whole thing together.

After exiting the stadium, my legs were like boards. I downed my last gel and struggled to get back to a comfortable pace for the next two miles. Not until the last mile was I able to loosen up again and pick it up to the finish. I ended up finishing in 2:02:13 which was a course best for me by 8 minutes.

I love this race and as long as my family and I can make it there on Labor Day, I’ll run in this race. My only regret is that I didn’t run the inaugural race (I wasn’t so much a runner then) and be able to say I’ve run in every race.

Registration is now open for next years race on September 5th. Sign up early because it fills up fast. I’ll see you there.

Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend Review – Day Two

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Mickey’s Main Street U.S.A. 5K
Saturday, September 5th, 2009

The first thing to remember about 5K Fun Run’s are that they are Fun Run’s!!! Don’t ever think you’re going to PR a Fun Run. Most of the runners there are not runner’s and especially at an event like this, it’s all about location, location, location. With that said…on with the review.

I signed my wife and boyz up for this when I first registered for the 1/2 Marathon. We had ample time to do a little training and of course, buy appropriate running gear!!! When race time came, those training days seemed to fly by…just like our vacation.

The Fun Run started at 7 a.m. and the temperature was in the low 70′s but the humidity was around 80% so it was more than a little uncomfortable. There were approximately 4,000 participants at the event and the atmosphere was much more jovial than I’ve experienced at the longer distances. We took advantage of some of the free snacks and got in the corral well before it was time to go. There was a little concern before the gun went off as a runner not far from us fainted and had to be assisted by a medical team. To Disney’s credit, the medical team was there within minutes and before we started, it looked like she was doing fine.

A barbershop quartet, Mickey and Minnie Mouse saw us off promptly at 7 a.m. With the number of people there, it took a while to get going and when it did, the going was slow. That fit perfectly into my pace plan for us. I figured my wife and the boyz could run and have fun around 15-16/min. miles.

The course started at the Mickey & Friends Parking Structure and we headed toward Disney’s California Adventure. It’s important to remember when you run within the theme parks that some of the paths get narrow and keeping an eye on who’s in front and behind you is very important. There were many characters along the route and we (along with many others) stopped to take photos with many of them.

After looping thru California Adventure we were off to run in Disneyland. The interesting part of the route is that you get to see some of the back stage areas of the buildings and attractions – sort of behind the scenes access if you will. After several walking breaks and shoe ties, we headed towards the finish line – Main Street.

Now in other years, they’ve finished the race in a parking lot which provided ample space for handing out medals, refreshments and photos. Having the finish line at the end of Main Street was probably not a great idea. Now the atmosphere was great with characters, fans lining Main Street, the music and engaging announcer – it was just there was no room for anything when you were done!!! The crowd stacked up at the medal lines and getting to the bagels, water and Powerade was extremely difficult. While half the fun is just taking in the mass of sweaty humanity, we just tried to exit with all limbs intact as quickly as possible.

Overall, the experience was more than enjoyable and running with my family was a thrill. The medals are plastic, artistic and colorful and the same can be said for the shirts. The only thing that Disney officials need to work on for next year is thinking thru the finish line area.

Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend Review – Day One

2009 Disneyland 1/2 Marathon LogoDisneyland Health & Fitness Expo
Friday, September 4th, 2009

With so many things going on this past weekend, I thought I’d break up my race review into three parts: the Disneyland Heath & Fitness Expo, Mickey’s Main Street, U.S.A. 5K and the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon.

The Health Expo started at 2 p.m. on Friday. Not wanting to fight the initial crowd with my wife and kids, we decided to let it play out for an hour before we went and picked up our goodies. Over the last two years, the Expo has been very well orchestrated. There were never long lines (unlike the Indiana Jones Adventure or the Finding Nemo Underwater Adventure) and I could breeze in and out within a 1/2 hour. Not this year!!! Turns out the lines at the Expo would give the Disney attractions a run for their money.

The confusion started when we arrived at 3 p.m. and noticed a strange line forming outside the main event hall and into the lobby. Since I knew the layout of the Expo from the previous years, we ventured into the hall to where we were to pick up our bibs and t-shirts. Arriving at the end of the hall, I noticed that the bib pick-up was no longer inside the hall. The long conga line that snaked thru the Expo was the line for t-shirt pick-up.

After retracing our steps back out into the lobby, we finally found our first volunteer who told us the bib pick-up was in a separate hall outside and downstairs. At this point, the conga line was outgrowing the lobby and was spilling outside. Now, I’ll give Disney credit for dressing up the ramps leading to the bib pick-up with a track carpet and Disney character silhouettes – but that’s about where my praise ends.

Wandering back up to earth’s surface, we joined the aforementioned conga line without much glee. Just when we thought there was a little hope with the line moving at an incredible speed, we were again halted in our tracks only to learn they snaked the line around a couple more exhibits. I’m still trying to put my thumb on why they separated the bib pick-up and shirt distribution. With the bibs you have multiple lines. That breaks up your participants into several smaller lines where handing out the t-shirt at the same time should have been a simple task. Every other race I’ve been to has done it like this (and so did Disney the 2 previous years).

My suggestion to the Disneyland Health & Fitness Expo representatives would be this: if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Go back to the old ride because this new one doesn’t beat the original.

Overall the vendors and race wear were top-notch and I need to give a shout out to my new friends over at iFitness for the Mini Sport Belt I picked up!!! It’s a small running belt, big enough for your cards and phone, and it didn’t move an inch during the race!!!

OK, What Did I Forget?

Friday, September 4th, 2009

It happens every time I travel to run in a race. “What did I forget?” On the eve before I pack up the family to spend 5 well earned days in the California sun (and smoke), I know I’m going to leave something behind. I procrastinate and pack the night before (opposed to my wife whose been packed for 3 weeks). This always leads to me scrambling to get my running gear together.

[x] Shoes
[x] Socks (different kinds for different conditions and moods)
[x] Shirt and shorts (warm and cold options)
[x] Band-aids and Vaseline
[x] Garmin and sunglasses
[x] Clif shot gels and Tiger’s Milk energy bars

Yep, I’m ready…or am I? I’ll lose sleep over it tonight although I know that anything I forgot will be readily available at the expo. Feel free to comment if I forgot something obvious. I’ll be back on Wednesday with race reports of Mickey’s Main Street U.S.A. 5K and the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon.

Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Wildfire Update

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

First, I would like to say that I emailed Disney last night about the California wildfire situation. So, at this point, I am going to take full responsibility for the email that Disney sent to registered runners this morning (until somebody else takes credit). Here’s the content of that email:

Dear Disneyland® Half Marathon Weekend Guests,
Recent news of fires in the Southern California mountains has caused an interest among runners who will be joining us this weekend for the Disneyland Half Marathon. At this time, we are moving forward with the Disneyland Half Marathon as planned. We continue to monitor the air quality situation with the Southern California Air Quality Management District (AQMD); the safety of our runners is our first priority. You can visit their Web site at www.agmd.gov to keep updated on the current situation and forecasts for race day. The location of the fires is quite a distance from our resort, and the weather forecast indicates a week of cooler weather and favorable wind patterns, so we anticipate a safe and comfortable weekend of fun.

Of course, we will keep you posted should anything change, but for now get your shoes ready for the Happiest Race on Earth! See you real soon!
